No more meekly saying ‘yes’
When my heart is screaming ‘no’
No more taming of my feelings
So my power won’t show
No more hiding my exuberance
From disapproving eyes
No more watering down myself
So my spirit won’t rise
No more ‘smalling up’ of me
Pretending I am not here
No more running from the music
And the spotlight’s glare
No more living in this prison
Barricaded by my fears
No more turning and retreating
In the face of new frontiers
Even as I am speaking
I am taking shape and form
Harnessing my powers
Like a gathering storm
There’s no obstacle so bold
As to dare stand in my way
I am taking back my life
And I am doing it today.
— Jean Wilson, No More Smalling Up Of Me.
It is your job to save yourself. Not your spouse’s, not your lover’s, not your friend’s. Your job.
What’s more, you weren’t sent here to die with the talents you came with unrealized. I think the saddest things that fill graveyards are not the dead but their unfulfilled dreams that died in the land of “Almost” — God-given dreams that were killed by accomplices, Fear and Doubt, aided and abetted by their co-conspirator, Unbelief.
Destiny and Purpose course through your veins. Do you understand that? Your destiny. Your purpose. Uniquely bestowed upon you. You weren’t sent to become a carbon copy of someone else. Mahatma Gandhi already came. As did Martin Luther King, Jr. And Oprah. And as much as we can compare to others, we will never be them.
Therefore, it is incumbent upon each of us to trust our own journey, filled with its unique purpose and preparation for our own mission.
Trust that gut instinct you’ve had since you were five years-old, which said you came to do awesome work here. You came to be great. Stop listening to the self-talk that tells you that you’re not educated enough, not thin enough, not talented enough, not liked enough. Not whatever enough.
Stop trying to fit in when you were born to stand out!
That’s what causes us discomfort — the knowledge of what we know we’re supposed to be, juxtaposed with our circumstances. But isn’t that the whole point of faith? Faith in yourself that tells the universe, “Bring it on!” in that place where preparation meets opportunity. Look to God, yes. But know this, God is looking right back at you. So, look into that mirror, dead in the eye. See the real you — where unlimited greatness resides.
